Mobile phone scam warning

Dear Resident,

Do you leave your phone on the table while eating out or having a coffee?

Recently we have had reports of mobile phones being taken by distraction thieves.

Thieves will often approach the victim, whilst they are sitting at a table outside.

They might ask for money, directions or simply strike up a conversation while using a piece of paper or a menu to cover your phone on the table.

The phone will then be removed underneath the paper whilst the thief is still distracting the victim.

Often victims won't realise their phone has been stolen until the thieves have managed to get away.

What can you do to prevent this from happening?

  • Don’t leave your phone, iPad, tablet unattended, out of your sight, or left on a table.
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • When you’ve finished using it, put it away.
  • Don't engage with anyone who is asking for money and acting suspiciously.
  • For more information on how to prevent your phone being pocketed by thieves head to our website here.

    Kind Regards,

    Annabelle Mullee
