April newsletter from your eastern Peterborough neighbourhood team

Dear {FIRST NAME},

Welcome to the April edition of your neighbourhood policing newsletter.

Over the last three months, your east Peterborough Neighbourhood Policing Team (who cover Parnwell, Dogsthorpe, Welland, Eastfield, Fengate and Millfield) have been focussing on three main areas as their local priorities, based on feedback from the community.

Drug use, dealing and associated anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Millfield, primarily around Craig Street and Russell StreetThe team have carried out 151 hours of patrols in these specific areas, which included two arrests being made for possession with intent to supply after stop-searches found both class A and B drugs on two occasions.

Three properties within the immediate vicinity of Russell Street and Craig Street have been issued Closure Orders (25B Lincoln Road, flat 2 of 57 Lincoln Road and 86 Lincoln Road). These properties have all been contributing towards ASB and drug use/dealing in the area. The closure orders are in place for three months initially, however longer-term problem solving still is ongoing in relation to these addresses.

Residents of Russell Street and Craig Street were surveyed at both the start of the year and the end of this quarter, with feedback being residents seeing an overall improvement and reduction of ASB and drug use/dealing in the area compared to the initial survey.

Illegal and obstructive parking in Millfield, primarily the Lincoln Road stretch between Windmill Street and Searjeant Street – The team have carried out 465 hours of patrols in the area including a dedicated day of action and joint exercises with the fire and rescue service, which included:

  • Issuing 8 traffic offence reports (TORs)
  • Seizing 4 vehicles for having no insurance
  • Issuing 188 fixed penalty notices (FPNs) for parking offences
  • Successful partnership work between Cambridgeshire Constabulary and Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service has been established and an agreement between the two organisations for regular joint exercises to take place whereby access checks are conducted in identified areas.

A total of £5,640 has been generated in fines for vehicles parked in a manner causing an unnecessary obstruction, resulting in us seeing significantly fewer offences in recent weeks, as well as this being commented on by the local community and councillors.

Anti-social behaviour, including street drinking in the vicinity of Broadway Cemetery – Regular patrols have been carried out during the day and night where the team have been able to gather intelligence, engage with members of the public and move people on due to the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in place.

A meeting was arranged with the cemetery supervisor, Aragon staff and wildlife officers, which was held in the cemetery grounds for specific concerns to be highlighted and areas of concern assessed.

The team provided advice around measures that could be taken to deter people from gaining entry to the cemetery at night when it is closed for public access and stop the reported anti-social behaviour which includes drug use, littering and rough sleeping.

Partnership working is underway to improve the area and reduce the current ASB and crime taking place, with police patrols continuing in the area in coming months.

You may have seen in the local news that a man was stabbed in the cemetery last week. While we understand this incident is concerning, we believe the incident to be isolated and our officers have made an arrest. The suspect has since been released on bail while we carry out further enquiries, however we have increased patrols in the area. And in a separate incident the team have made an arrest in Eastfield Road in connection with drug dealing, where the man remains in our custody today.

    Kind Regards,

    Inspector Sam Tucker
Peterborough Neighbourhood Policing Team (city centre and eastern sector)

    Crime prevention and useful information

The warmer weather has finally arrived! While we don’t want to put a dampener on it (no pun intended), we would like to take the opportunity to remind you have home security and taking precautions to protect your home from potential burglars.

To minimize the risk of burglary during spring and summer:

  • Consider not leaving windows open during warm weather, and make sure windows and doors are locked when not at home.
  • If people are going on holiday, avoid advertising it on social media.
  • Keep gardening tools locked away and not out on display. When storing tools, make sure locks on sheds and other outdoor buildings are properly secure.
  • You can find more burglary prevention advice on our dedicated home security webpages.
